Building A New Home for Hope Street Family Center

Hope Street Family Center is moving. Hope Street Family Center will move its childhood education, literacy, and social services across the street to its new home in 2012. Construction began spring 2011 on the new 26,500 sqft. 4-story energy efficient building, located on the southeast corner of Hope Street and Venice Blvd. The new Hope Street Family Center will provide expanded, modern facilities that will merge its proven health, wellness and family development services with increased wellness and recreation opportunities for the whole community. Completion is expected by year end 2012.

Recreation, play and exercise are critical tools for combating the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Moreover, recreation is a highly effective way for parents to relieve stress and for families to share quality time through healthy activities. This new facility will house Hope Streets existing services plus new recreational programming at the facility and across the street at Venice Hope Park.  The planned expansion of Hope Street Family Center will serve 3,000 children, youth and families annually. This represents a 60% increase in the number of residents served.

The new Hope Street Family Center, a Community Education, Recreation and Health Resource of California Hospital, will include:
• Community Wellness and Recreation Center: Youth Recreation Room, Homework Lab, Media Center & Library, Creative Arts Classroom, Fitness and Dance Studio, Family Literacy Classroom, and Continuation High School Classroom
• Child Development Center and Outdoor Play Area: Early Care and Education Classrooms,Developmental Assessment Offices and Outdoor Play areas
• Multipurpose Sports Court: Community basketball court and/or soccer field
• Venice Hope Open Park Space: Green space and walking path and Children’s play space

This project will bring immediate and lasting benefits to the surrounding community, providing the following:
• Expanded Opportunities for Community Recreation and Wellness Activities
• Centralized Social Services that Meet the Needs of Neighborhood Families
• Improved Community Cohesion and Stability for downtown Los Angeles

California Hospital Medical Center Foundation and CRA/LA has raised 12.7 million dollars, reaching 80% of the $15.7 million project total. Supporters include: AEG Community Benefits, Proposition K LA4Kids, Proposition 40: State Urban Parks Act Grant, Proposition 1C Infill Infrastructure, and City of Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA/LA), Weingart Foundation, First 5 LA, The Ralph M.
