California Governor Newsom Visits Hope Street

Governor Newsom and Hope Street Director Vickie Kropenske visit a classroom on their tour.

The Governor plays with children in our Early Childhood Center.

Hope Street Margolis Family Center proudly welcomed Governor Gavin Newsom as he visited with children and parents in our Early Childhood Education program on August 8th.

Recognizing Hope Street’s program as a model to replicate throughout California, Governor Newsom exclaimed: “I’ve done hundreds of these types of tours; I have never seen a program like this anywhere in the state of California.”

Along with Governor Newsom, California’s first Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, California State Senator Holly Mitchell, California State Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, and Deputy Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency for Early Childhood Development Kris Perry were also in attendance.

“It is centers like these that support not only learning, but help to lay the foundation for healthy brain development and future lifelong health,” explained Dr. Burke Harris.

Governor Newsom’s visit was part of his effort to highlight his historic $2.3 billion investment in early childhood education and his commitment to create and implement a master plan for early learning and care.

That's a Wrap!

Summer of Science students visited the Getty Museum to see the "Book of Beasts" exhibit.

Our older students shared what they learned over the summer with their younger counterparts.

The Hope Street students had another amazing Summer of Science, thanks to the incredible generosity of new and longtime friends, supporters and donors of our annual Champions for Children luncheon! Over 130 kids learned about anatomy, robotics, engineering, chemistry, and so much more during the 8-week program.

They built hydraulic arms, dissected pigeons and iguanas (eek!), made batteries, constructed models of the solar system and went on weekly field trips. The summer ended with a SPLASH when Jonathan Club graciously hosted 75 kids at its Beach Club in Santa Monica.

Thank you Jonathan Club for making summer memories that will last throughout the year!

"Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader"
Local Girl Scout and school donate books to Hope Street

A student enjoys a book donated by Katherine Blue and The Willows Community School.

Marisela, a mom enrolled in our Family Literacy Program, chooses a few books to read to her daughter.

We would like to give a big thank you to Katherine Blue and her school, The Willows Community School, for generously donating hundreds of books to Hope Street families!

Middle schooler Katherine collected books with the help of The Willows Community School librarian, Cathy Leverkus, as part of her Girl Scout Silver Award Library Project. The books were distributed to our families at a community festival hosted by Hope Street moms at the Venice Hope Park in July.

As expressed in the title quotation from journalist, editor, and women's rights advocate, Margaret Fuller, reading is key to helping children grow into future leaders. Donations of books like those from Katherine and her school help families to create their own home libraries and build an enriched literacy environment. Reading to children gives parents the opportunity to strengthen family bonds, support children’s early literacy skills and inspire imagination.

Hope Street's Graduates

On Friday, August 16th, Hope Street’s Mercy Early Care Education Center, located across from California Hospital, held a Preschool Culmination ceremony for 15 children transitioning to kindergarten.

Students welcomed parents and families to “Wacky Farms” and treated them to songs including “BINGO” and “La Vaca Lechera.” There was also a presentation of certificates followed by a dance performance.
